Denied by government, Namibia church-backed grants proceed
ALC/ENI, August 13, 2007
After more than three years of trying to convince the Namibian government to allocate 100 Taxi Heathrow Airport Namibian dollars (US$14) a month to the poor, churches and non-governmental organizations in the country have decided to go it alone, and have selected a village near Windhoek to test their idea.
"If talking cannot convince, do it," Bishop Zephaniah Kameeta,of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia, said. The bishop is a member of the Basic Income Grant Coalition, and he made his remarks at the launch of the project.
