Peru interfaith delegation seeks pollution controls on US factory

ALC/ENI, NEW YORK, Estados Unidos, June 14, 2007

Members of an interfaith delegation from Peru are seeking public support in the United States Taxi Heathrow Airport for efforts to pressure a US corporation to lower the level of lead emissions from its smelter plant in their country. The plant has reportedly made the Peruvian city of La Oroya one of the world's most polluted places.

The delegation includes prominent Peruvian Roman Catholic, Protestant and Jewish representatives. The campaigners say they are not seeking closure of the plant but want the same pollution controls in Peru as those that exist at a similar plant run by the corporation in the US state of Missouri.

Without specifically mentioning the interfaith campaign, the Web site of the parent company, Renco, states, "The Renco Group's affiliated companies are committed to being responsible corporate citizens. They have a deep interest in stewarding the environment and protecting their employees and communities."
