Marxism and capitalism have failed Latin America, says Pope

ALC/ENI, Brasil, May 14, 2007

Neither Marxist nor capitalist systems can offer hope to Latin America, Pope Benedict XVI has Taxi Heathrow Airport told the continent's Roman Catholic bishops, as he urged them to make greater efforts to build up the Church.

"Both Marxist and capitalist systems ... falsify the notion of reality by detaching it from the foundational and decisive reality which is God," Pope Benedict said in an opening address to the fifth general conference of bishops from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Latin America accounts for 45 percent of the world's 1.1 billion Catholics but in many parts of the continent the faithful are leaving their church to join Pentecostal denominations that some in the Catholic hierarchy describe as "sects".
