CLAI elects its new President
Claudia Florentín and ALC/CLAI, BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, February 22, 2007
The V Assembly of CLAI gathered in the city of Ramos Mejía, in the western Taxi Heathrow Airport section of the Argentine capital, elected as its new President, the Right Reverend Julio Murray, Bishop of the Episcopal Anglican Church of Panama.
Murray, together with Pastor Oscar Bolioli, President of the Methodist Church in Uruguay, and Pastor Felipe Adolf of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ecuador, all presidential candidates, had to go through a second ballot as none of them obtained an absolute majority on the first ballot. On the second ballot both Murray and Adolf obtained 66 votes each, which made a third ballot necessary and on which the bishop obtained the necessary majority.
The newly elected president replaces the Right Reverend Julio Cesar Holguin, Bishop of the Dominican Episcopal Church, who was president since the IV Assembly of CLAI in 2001.
The 48 year old Panamanian bishop, has ample experience in the ecumenical field, having previously held leadership positions in CLAI.
