Campaign for the right to abortion begins
LISBOA, January 29, 2007
The first referendum that took place in 1998, was lost by a very small margin Taxi Heathrow Airport (51% against 49%) and with an abstention of 70%. During these past 8 years many women have been taken to court and imprisoned for having decided to abort. A paradigmatic case is that of the trial of Maia on January 18, 2002, in which 17 women were found guilty and sentenced for having transgressed the norm and deciding about her body.
The pre-campaign has already begun, and besides those parties that will be present in the call to “Yes” (the Socialist Party, the Portuguese Communist Party and the Esguerra Bloc), there are 5 citizens movements that have been formed and legally recognized: the Citizen and Responsibility for “Yes” Movement, Doctors for Electing, Youth for “Yes,” Vote “Yes,” and the “Yes” Movement (mostly of the Communist Party).
In Portugal, as in other countries of Europe such as Cyprus, Ireland, Poland, Malta and Andorra, the right to abortion is not recognized and women are tried, sentenced and, as in the Portuguese case, imprisoned.
